Men want weddings, women want houses…

Contrary to popular opinion, if they had a lump-sum more men than women would pay for their wedding, and more women than men would put down a deposit on a house, according to Together,a mortgage lender.

Although fewer people are getting married now than a decade ago, and both men and women are getting married at an older age (38 for men and 36 for women), a wedding still puts a dent in your back pocket. The average cost of a wedding is £17,674.

Men seem to be more romantic with 6% saying they would use the money for their big day, but only 4% of women said the same. More women also favoured home ownership with 10% more women than men saying they would put the money on a house deposit.

The property ladder

Despite the gender gap, home ownership is clearly a priority for both men and women with 74% of women and 64% of mean opting for the property ladder over a wedding.
